Introduction

Kia ora, tamariki! Today, we’re going to embark on a magical adventure into the world of addition! Are you ready to become addition wizards? Let’s stir up some fun and learn how to combine numbers!

Story Time: The Lost Numbers

Once upon a time in a beautiful land called Numberville, every number had a special friend. 1 loved playing with 2, and together they had amazing adventures! But one day, they discovered that all the numbers were lost in the Enchanted Forest. Only by working together could they find their way home.

Activity: The Number Quest

  1. Gather Around: Sit in a circle so that everyone can see each other and the magical chart we are going to create.

  2. Magic Number Cards: I will distribute cards with the numbers 1 to 10 written on them. Each of you will be a number on our adventure!

  3. Combining Forces: I’ll call out pairs of numbers, and when I do, those numbers will come together at the centre of the circle. For example, if I say “1 and 2,” those of you with those cards will join hands!

  4. Count the Magic: Once you are together, we will all count out loud how many numbers are there in total (1 + 2 = 3)! Everyone will practice saying their addition sentence, and we’ll write it on our magical chart.

  5. Illustrate the Adventure: After we have gone through a few combinations, we will illustrate our adventure on the board, drawing pictures of the numbers joining together to form a bigger number.

And just like that, we are on our way to becoming master addition wizards! This magical adventure teaches us that with teamwork and a little bit of practice, we can make maths fun and exciting.
