To kick off our lesson, let's have a little fun! Who has some coins with them? Take a moment to reach into your pockets or bags and pull out any coins you have.

As you pull out your coins, I want you to:

1. Identify the Coin: Name the coin (e.g., 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, etc.).
2. Value Check: Share how much the coin is worth.
3. Count Together: Let's see how many coins we have altogether! We’ll make a little tally on the board.

Interactive Activity – The Coin Challenge

Once everyone has shared their coins, we’ll divide into small groups. Each group will:

• Get a handful of mixed coins from our “magic money bag”.
• Work together to sort them by type and then count the total value of your coins.

Discussion Prompt

After counting, each group will present their coins and their total amount to the class. As a bonus, think about:

• What could you buy with that amount?
• How might they feel when they reach into their pockets and find just enough money to buy their favourite snack?

This will lead us into today’s lesson on counting and understanding money!
