Lesson Script: Relating a Hundreds Chart to a Number Line

Duration: 30 Minutes

Introduction (5 minutes)

Objective

Today, we will learn how to relate a hundreds chart to a number line. We will see how both tools can help us understand numbers better.

Hook

(Show the class a hundreds chart on the board.)
"Does anyone know what this is? That's right! This is a hundreds chart. Who can tell me how many numbers are on this chart?"
(Encourage responses and guide them to understand that there are numbers from 1 to 100.)

Direct Instruction (10 minutes)

What is a Hundreds Chart?

A hundreds chart is a grid that helps us see numbers up to 100. It is arranged in rows and columns. The numbers go from left to right and top to bottom.

Let’s count together using the hundreds chart.

  1. Count from 1 to 10.
  2. Then count from 11 to 20.
  3. Continue this way until we reach 100.

What is a Number Line?

A number line is a straight line that shows numbers in order. Each number is spaced evenly apart.

  1. Draw a number line on the board from 0 to 100 with equal spacing.
  2. Mark the numbers at regular intervals, just like on the hundreds chart.

Relating the Two

"Look at 1 and 100 on both the hundreds chart and the number line. They are the same numbers, just represented differently!"

Guided Practice (5 minutes)

Activity: Number Matching

  1. Hand out small copies of a hundreds chart and a blank number line to each student.
  2. Ask students to fill in the number line by using the numbers from the hundreds chart.
  3. Walk around the classroom to assist students and check their work.

Independent Practice (5 minutes)

Activity: Fill It In

Distribute a worksheet that has an incomplete number line and hundreds chart.

Closure (5 minutes)

Review

Bring the class back together and discuss:

  1. "How is the hundreds chart different from a number line?"
  2. "Why do you think these tools are helpful in learning numbers?"

Summary

Reiterate that both the hundreds chart and the number line are helpful for understanding numbers and how they relate to one another.

Exit Ticket

For the last minute, ask students to write one number they remember from today and draw it on both the hundreds chart and the number line.

Assessment

Differentiation

For students needing extra help, provide additional visuals or one-on-one support. For advanced students, offer challenges such as identifying numbers that are 10 more or less than a given number.
