To capture students’ attention and set the tone for a thought-provoking lesson on language development.
Create an Atmosphere
Begin the class by dimming the lights slightly and playing a brief audio clip of various languages being spoken. Choose languages that are less commonly heard in your region, perhaps including a mix of sounds from indigenous languages, regional dialects, and international tongues.
The Soundtrack of our Lives
As the audio plays, encourage students to close their eyes and focus on the sounds. After about 2-3 minutes, stop the clip and ask students to open their eyes.
Group Reflection
Pose the following questions to the class:
Allow students to discuss their thoughts in small groups for 5-10 minutes.
After the group discussions have concluded, bring the class back together and highlight the pivotal role that language plays in connecting us as humans. Transition into a brief overview of what constitutes language development and its various stages.
Finally, introduce the lesson objectives centred around language development. Emphasise how understanding language not only enriches communication but also deepens our connections with one another culturally and emotionally.
This creative beginning will encourage active participation by appealing to students' senses and emotions, setting the stage for a dynamic exploration of language development.
