A Fun Start to Math: The Grocery Store Adventure!

Introduction

Welcome to Math class, fourth graders! Today, we're going to visit a virtual grocery store right in our classroom. Are you ready to grab your shopping carts and explore a world of numbers? Let’s get started!

Setting the Scene

Imagine this: You each have $20 to spend at the grocery store. Your mission is to shop for items on your grocery list by adding and subtracting whole numbers. But there’s a twist! You’ll have to keep track of your spending and ensure that you don’t go over your budget!

Step 1: Grocery Store Items

First, let’s take a look at the items we have in our grocery store:

I will provide each of you with a grocery list to start with. You can choose 3 of the items to buy.

Step 3: Let’s Calculate!

Once you have chosen your items, it’s time to do some math! You will:

  1. Add the total cost of the items you selected.
  2. Subtract that amount from your total budget of $20.
  3. Discuss with a partner how you calculated your total and what you still have left to spend.
